The new movie The End of Oak Street was filmed for IMAX, but it might be hard to catch the movie in an IMAX theater this summer.

The acclaimed film, which has a positive 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes right now, is being blocked from most IMAX screens due to the popularity of The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Some fans on Reddit have even noted that their IMAX screenings for The End of Oak Street were canceled and replaced with the former movies.

Only one movie theater in New York City (AMC Empire 25) and only one movie theater in the main Los Angeles area (AMC Burbank 16) will be showing the film in the IMAX format.

How much of the movie was filmed in IMAX?

The End of Oak Street has a 99 minute runtime and the film features 44 minutes of footage shot in IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio footage, plus with their sound mix.

The company noted:

Featuring 44 minutes of IMAX’s exclusive Expanded Aspect Ratio, IMAX worked closely with Mitchell from early camera tests to optimize the film’s final visual presentation. With a custom sound mix tailored specifically for our screens, IMAX is the only way to experience true cinematic immersion.

The End of Oak Street is part of the “Filmed for IMAX” program. Through the program, the company “partners with filmmakers to harness IMAX’s technology, from pre-production to release to deliver the world’s most immersive experience.”

Is it worth seeing it in IMAX?

If you want the most immersive experience possible, then YES! Movies included in the filmed for IMAX program give you an experience that can only be had while sitting in an IMAX theater.

There are often movies played in IMAX theaters that do not include an expanded aspect ratio, but nearly half of The End of Oak Street has this format.

IMAX screenings do cost extra, but the premium surcharge will be worth it for most viewers.
