Ed Sheeran's Boston Concerts Might Be Canceled After All, But for Unexpected Reason | Just Jared

Ed Sheeran is supposed to perform two shows in the Boston-area venue Gillette Stadium this weekend, but it looks like both of the concerts might need to be canceled.

Ed removed his former opening act Macklemore from the remaining shows on his tour amid backlash to the pro-Palestine comments he made on stage at two New Jersey concerts.

It’s ironic that the shows might get canceled because the whole controversy reportedly stemmed from Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft not wanting Macklemore to perform at his venue.

Ed wrote in a statement on September 15, “After Macklemore‘s performances at my New Jersey shows, venues on my upcoming tour dates communicated that they would pull the shows if he was still supporting. I was informed that this stance was based on how Macklemore conveyed part of his message during his performance, rather than on everything that was said. I spoke with the venues at length all week to try and build a bridge. One of those people was Robert Kraft. I was also involved in direct talks with promoters along with activists on both sides to try and find a mutual resolution for all, but the venue’s and promoter’s decision was final… Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine. Macklemore‘s contract for the tour was with the promoter, not me.”

“I would never let down the fans who had made plans, nor would I abandon the touring crew and the other support acts and musicians who rely on me for work and to make a living,” he added.

In solidarity, all of the other opening acts and Ed‘s backing band all dropped out of the tour as well.

So, why might the shows get canceled now? There’s an unexpected reason!

The weather might force the shows to be canceled

New England is about to be hit with a nor’easter storm that could potentially force the shows to be canceled.

Gillette Stadium is an outdoor, open-air venue and the heavy winds could cause danger inside the stadium, especially with heavy equipment standing tall around the floor.

A stadium source told TMZ that “everything is ready to go for Ed to perform tomorrow night, except for lighting … which the crew was still testing Thursday night, just in case the Friday show happens.”

Weather.com reports that a high wind warning is in effect from 8am on Friday morning until 2am on Sunday morning.

“Northeast winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts 45 to 60 mph expected,” the website reports. “Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. The long duration of the winds coupled with heavy rain and fully leafed trees may exacerbate the risk for tree damage and power outages. People are urged to secure loose objects that could be blown around or damaged by the wind.”

Ed teared up at his Philly show last weekend and revealed that friends and family members have “abandoned” him amid the controversy.
