When Dancing With the Stars returns next week for season 35, there will be two eliminations in week one and the premiere episodes will look a bit different than usual.

It was revealed on the Get Real podcast on Thursday (September 10) that the show will send home one male celebrity and one female celebrity in week one.

The two-night premiere, airing on Tuesday, September 15 and Wednesday, September 16, will see the talent split up into male and female groups. All of the men will perform on one night, with one celebrity going home at the end. All of the women will dance on the other night, with another celebrity going home at the end.

This is the same twist from 2018’s athletes season

“I don’t even think I was on the show when that happened,” Mark Ballas said on the podcast. “This is a first. … It’s not even an even playing field, right? It’s, like, the cast is split in half. They’re, kind of, like, ‘Boys over there, girls over here; one of you is going from each group.’ So, that’s a little different.”

During the athletes season that aired in 2018, which was the show’s shortest season ever, a man and a woman were sent home every night, including in week one.

DWTS usually doesn’t eliminate any contestants in week one, but two people are going home right at the beginning this year.

There are 16 celebrities this year, which is tied with seasons 9 and 31 for having the biggest cast in the show’s history.

Only 14 celebrities competed last year, which might explain why ABC is getting rid of two people in week one!
