What is the Jay-Z In 8 documentary about?

Jay-Z in 8 is an eight-part HBO documentary series in which the rap icon sits down with legendary producer Rick Rubin for an intimate exploration of his music and creative process.

According to Variety, the docuseries, which premiered Sept. 18, was directed by Rubin and filmed at Paris’ Palais Brongniart. Throughout the series, Rubin cues up songs, seemingly at random, prompting Jay-Z to unpack them, often word by word. The result offers a deeper look at Jay-Z’s skill as a whip-smart lyricist while also highlighting rap as a powerful art form, medium of expression and vehicle for introspection.

Jay-Z and Bey weren’t the only stars who shut down the premiere. The event drew in a star-studded crowd that included his wife, Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, and numerous stars including Fat Joe, DJ Khaled, Yo Gotti, Charlamagne tha God, Winnie Harlow and rapper Gunna.
