Anya Taylor-Joy Says Women ‘Don’t Method Act,’ Explains Why

Anya Taylor-Joy believes women don’t method act.

The 30-year-old Emmy nominee argues that women don’t have the same opportunity to method act in the way that men do during a new interview with Complex News.

“If you’ll notice, women don’t method act because we have things to take care of, so we can’t completely lose our minds,” she said.

Anya continued, “I see acting as a controlled psychosis in a way. You’re pretending to be somebody else and having their thoughts 16 hours a day and moving like them, in their house, in their clothes. It’s like having a sister or a roommate check in up [in my mind] for a little bit.”

The Lucky star explained how grateful she is to have people in her life that understand that and can get her re-centered if something “gets out of hand.”

“But I can’t imagine keeping it up all the time because, again, you’re going to work with hundreds of people and it is your responsibility to be good to them and to help them do their best job,” she added. “If you’re too invested in being an asshole then that’s not gonna be very fun.”

Anya is not the first actor to speak out against method acting. Kristen Stewart spoke similarly when discussing the topic during a conversation with The New York Times last year.

In August 2025, Austin Butler credited actors Tom Hardy and Jeremy Allen White for helping him pull away from method acting.

Mads Mikkelsen also bluntly called method acting “bullsh-t” while promoting Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore in 2022.

Anya has become known for her top-notch performances, particularly in intense roles like Furiosa, The Witch, and The Northman. Yet she says she’s never gone full “Method.”

She’s currently starring in the Apple TV series Lucky and her stunt double got pulled over by the cops alongside co-star Drew Starkey!
