Val Kilmer will be back on the big screen this year in the film As Deep as the Grave, which used AI technology to create his performance.

The acclaimed actor was originally cast in the movie, but was too sick to shoot it before his death in 2025. His daughter and his estate gave their permission for the filmmakers to use AI to include him in the movie.

Val is seen at different ages throughout the trailer and he delivers a line at the end of the clip. “Don’t fear the dead and don’t fear me,” he says while kneeling down next to a child.

Writer and director Coerte Voorhees told Variety last month, “He was the actor I wanted to play this role. It was very much designed around him. It drew on his Native American heritage and his ties to and love of the Southwest. I was looking at a call sheet the other day, and we had him ready to shoot. He was just going through a really, really tough time medically, and he couldn’t do it.”

Abigail Lawrie, Tom Felton, Wes Studi and Abigail Breslin all star, and Val will be “a significant part” of the movie.
