Maren Morris Pushes Back on Gender Stereotypes, Says Her Son Doesn’t ‘Need to Toughen Up, Actually’ | Maren Morris | Celebrity News and Gossip | Entertainment, Photos and Videos
Maren Morris is sharing how she’s pushing back against gender stereotypes, especially as she is raising a young boy herself who just turned 6.
She uploaded a TikTok video over the weekend revealing she had gotten into a “heated” discussion with a male acquaintance that ended with him leaving.
Maren says they were talking about stereotypes as her son, Hayes Andrew Hurd, is starting to experience some of them, like thinking only girls can wear pink or that girls can’t like Spider-Man.
“They hear this s–t at school, like, from another friend, and it’s my job as his parent to correct them,” she said.

The 35-year-old singer said the man she was speaking to was “dismissive” and started saying, “these boys need to toughen up.”
Maren said that her first instinct upon hearing that was to “see red,” but she’s able to “emotionally regulate” enough to calmly explain that her son doesn’t “need to toughen up, actually,” nor does any other boy his age.
She said Hayes, who she shares with ex-husband Ryan Hurd, will cry if he busts “his gums or something,” but is also “extremely gentle,” and loves baseball, musicals, and colors.
“He’s obsessed with Hamilton right now. He loves colors. Sometimes we paint his nails. He loves to make jewelry now and friendship bracelets,” she said.
Maren continued, “And it’s like, he’s a person, and our job is just to never shame them for expressing those things. It’s the best part about being a kid.
She added that her 6-year-old son can “emotionally regulate himself better than this man could,” especially since the man in question stormed out of the party “very dramatically.”
The “Chasing After You” singer said it’s important for men’s mental health that they learn how to process their feelings at a young age.
“It’s my job to make a safe environment, that means physically and emotionally, for my son to grow up and be able to have the vernacular and be able to talk about these things,” she said.
