Madonna Shares Behind-the-Scenes Video From 2026 MTV VMAs Performance

Madonna is taking fans behind the scenes of her huge return to the MTV VMAs stage.

The 68-year-old “I Feel So Free” superstar shared a new behind-the-scenes video on Tuesday (October 6), offering a closer look at the making of her elaborate opening performance at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.

The performance marked Madonna‘s first time performing at the VMAs in 23 years, after she last took the stage at the awards show in 2003.

Madonna opened the September 27 ceremony with a performance inspired by her Confessions II era.

The number included music from “One Step Away,” “Bring Your Love” and “Danceteria Afterhours,” with Sabrina Carpenter and Charli xcx joining her onstage.

The performance also featured appearances from several stars, including Julia Garner, Debi Mazar, Seth Rogen, Sombr and even her ex, Tony Ward.

The newly released video gives fans a look at how the performance came together, including a MTV Making the Video-style intro and behind-the-scenes footage of rehearsals, costume planning and stage blocking.

Madonna’s Performance Was the Biggest Moment of the Night

Madonna‘s return also drew the biggest audience of the VMAs broadcast.

The 2026 ceremony averaged 8.43 million viewers across CBS and MTV, while viewership peaked at more than 15 million during the opening performance featuring Madonna, Sabrina and Charli.

Madonna also had a huge night when it came to awards, taking home seven trophies, including Artist of the Year and Best Album for Confessions II.
