'Digger' Box Office: Tom Cruise Movies Earns Just $1.2 Million in Previews, Opening Weekend Projection Revealed | Just Jared

Tom Cruise‘s new movie Digger is officially in theaters, but it’s facing a challenging start at the box office.

The new black comedy, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, brought in $1.2 million from Thursday preview screenings in North America, according to Deadline. Box office tracker The Numbers is also currently reporting $1.2 million in domestic earnings from the preview period.

The early numbers come as Digger heads into its first full weekend in theaters.

Current projections have the movie opening somewhere in the low-to-mid teens. TheWrap reports that Digger is expected to earn between $12 million and $15 million domestically this weekend.

If the projections prove correct, then the film will have a notably soft opening for the movie, which carries a sizable production budget, reportedly at $125 million, and that’s not including marketing expenses.

Opening weekend numbers don’t mean Digger couldn’t recoup its budget over the coming weeks, but it’s not the most optimistic start, especially when compared to Verity, also out this weekend. The latest Colleen Hoover adaptation starring Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett, and Dakota Johnson earned $4.5 million in previews.

Digger stars Tom Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a powerful man scrambling to position himself as humanity’s savior after setting off a potentially devastating crisis. The movie also stars Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons.

The movie marks Alejandro‘s first English-language feature since The Revenant and Tom‘s first movie with Warner Bros. since 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow.
