Drake and Don Toliver have officially released their highly anticipated collaboration “Solar Eclipse,” and listeners might recognize exactly where they’ve heard part of the song before.

The new track arrived on Drake‘s HABIBTI (FOMO) release on Friday (October 2), after previously being known among fans as his remix of Ella Langley‘s massive country hit “Choosin’ Texas.”

Drake first debuted the song during his Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) livestream in September, but it wasn’t immediately released to streaming services.

Now that it’s finally here, the song has an official title, full credits and plenty of Texas references to unpack.

What Is Drake’s “Solar Eclipse” About?

“Solar Eclipse” finds Drake and Don Toliver taking the musical foundation of “Choosin’ Texas” in a much more atmospheric R&B direction.

The song centers around a woman from Texas, with Drake describing a complicated romantic relationship while packing his verse with references to the state.

He name-checks College Station, River Oaks, Sugar Land, Pearland, The Woodlands, Fort Bend and Katy, while Don, who is from the Houston area, carries the Texas theme into the chorus.

The lyrics also reference former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, along with wood-grain car interiors, drinking and other imagery associated with Houston and Texas culture.

At its core, the track plays with a similar romantic tension to “Choosin’ Texas,” centering on a woman the narrator is drawn to but can’t necessarily hold onto.

The title itself comes from one of Drake‘s lyrics referencing an upcoming solar eclipse: “It’s a solar eclipse tomorrow and your period hit in the morning.”

Drake has not publicly explained why he ultimately chose that line as the song’s official title.

How Is “Solar Eclipse” Connected to Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas”?

“Solar Eclipse” interpolates Ella Langley‘s “Choosin’ Texas,” which is why Ella and the original song’s writers Miranda Lambert, Luke Dick and Joybeth Taylor are credited as writers on the new track.

The finished version does not list Ella as a featured performer, despite the song originally becoming known online as Drake‘s “Choosin’ Texas” remix.

Drake had already been showing plenty of love for Ella‘s music before the collaboration surfaced.

Earlier this year, he praised her songwriting in the comments of one of her Instagram posts, simply writing, “Goated Pen.”

He was later spotted at Ella‘s August concert in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he watched her perform “Choosin’ Texas.” Footage connected to that night subsequently appeared when Drake debuted his version of the song during his FOMO livestream in September.

The original “Choosin’ Texas” has since become one of the year’s biggest songs, spending a record-breaking 24 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Does “Solar Eclipse” Sample or Interpolate Another Song?

Yes. In addition to interpolating “Choosin’ Texas,” “Solar Eclipse” also incorporates Bun B‘s “Get Throwed.”

That explains why the song carries a lengthy list of writing credits beyond Drake, Don and the writers of Ella‘s song.

“Get Throwed,” originally released in 2005, features Pimp C, Z-Ro, Jeezy and Jay-Z, further tying Drake‘s new song into Houston rap history.

What Did Drake Say About Releasing “Solar Eclipse”?

After fans spent weeks asking when the songs from his FOMO project would hit streaming, Drake finally confirmed that several were coming.

“All the songs you guys have been asking for… Well, not all of them, but enough of them, are coming on Thursday,” he said during a livestream shortly before the release.

“Solar Eclipse” ultimately arrived alongside three other additions to HABIBTI: “Quebec,” “Classic PT2” and “Cold Shoulder,” the latter of which also features Don Toliver and Yebba.

“Solar Eclipse” marks the first officially released collaboration between Drake and Don Toliver.
