Madonna just made her long-awaited return to the MTV VMAs stage!
The 68-year-old superstar opened the 2026 MTV VMAs on Sunday night (September 27), marking her first performance at the awards show in 23 years.
For the opening number, Madonna performed “Danceteria,” with Sabrina Carpenter and Charli xcx joining her onstage.

Madonna kicked off the show with before launching into a live rendition of her Confessions II film, including elements of “Good for the Soul,” “Bring Your Love” and “Danceteria,” as well as her table choreography from “One Step Away.”
Sabrina Carpenter joined her on piano at first for “Bring Your Love,” and Charli xcx joined her for their performance of “Danceteria Afterhours.”
Madonna Returns to the VMAs Stage After 23 Years
Sunday night marked Madonna’s first live VMAs performance since 2003, when she famously opened the show alongside Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Her history with the VMAs stretches back to the inaugural ceremony in 1984, when she delivered her iconic “Like a Virgin” performance.
Madonna also entered this year’s ceremony as the most-nominated artist with 13 nominations.
What Did Madonna Perform at the 2026 VMAs?
Ahead of the show, CBS and MTV kept Madonna’s setlist under wraps and only confirmed that she would open the ceremony with special guests.
The surprise was revealed when Madonna performed “Bring Your Love” and “Danceteria Afterhours.”
The performance was presented in partnership with Spotify.
