Do You Need to See ‘Practical Magic’ 1 Before 2? Recapping the First Movie for Sequel Viewers!

The new movie Practical Magic 2 is now in theaters and you might be wondering if you need to watch the first film before seeing the sequel.

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are back as the Owens sisters, margarita-loving witches who are living under a curse that kills the men they love. In the sequel, Sally (Bullock) is now the mother of two young women, who were just young girls in the first movie. When one of the daughters (Joey King) falls in love, her boyfriend nearly dies and she sets out on a journey to end the curse, with Nicole and Sandra‘s characters following closely behind in an attempt to keep her safe.

So, do you need to watch the first movie before the sequel?

Yes and no.

NO: The sequel mainly focuses on the new story, with very little references to what happened in the first movie. There are enough refreshers throughout the film that will help you understand the backstory if you never watched the first installment.

YES: If you want to understand some callback moments to jokes from the first film, you should definitely rewatch it or check it out for the first time. There are some cute moments that will delight fans of the first film, but if you’ve never seen them, they’ll just go over your head.

What do you need to remember about the first movie? Here’s a recap!

Sally and Gillian Owens, played by Sandra and Nicole, are witches whose family has been cursed because of a spell placed on them by their ancestor Maria Owens. When the man that Maria loved never showed up to find her, she put a curse on herself to make sure she never fell in love again, but the curse trickled down to every future member of her family.

The curse on the Owens family causes every man they love to die.

Before a death happens in the Owens family, the death-watch beetle shows up with its ticking noise, signaling that a death is coming soon.

In the first movie, Gillian is involved with an abusive boyfriend named Jimmy, played by Goran Visnjic. The sisters poison him after he attempts to kill Gillian, but she is still haunted by him, so they dig up his body and try to resurrect him. Unfortunately, they bring him back as an evil spirit and the sisters have to use their magic, with help from people in town, to destroy him.

Throughout the movie, Sally was being investigated by detective Gary Hallet (Aidan Quinn), who was looking into the disappearance of Jimmy. In the end, he clears the sisters of any suspicion and ends up falling in love with Sally.
