Oh, Mary! is heading to HBO!

When Will Oh, Mary! Be on HBO Max?

The Tony and Olivier Award-winning play, written by and starring Cole Escola, has been filmed for a special that will debut on HBO and HBO Max in 2027.

Who Stars in HBO’s Filmed Version of Oh, Mary!?

The filmed version features Cole reprising their role as Mary Todd Lincoln alongside Giles Terera as Mary’s Husband, Bianca Leigh as Mary’s Chaperone, Tony Macht as Mary’s Husband’s Assistant and Michael Urie as Mary’s Teacher.

When Was the Oh, Mary! Special Filmed?

The special was filmed during the July 28, 2026 performance of Oh, Mary! at London’s Trafalgar Theatre, where Cole reprised the role they originated Off Broadway and later brought to Broadway.

Original Broadway director Sam Pinkleton also directed the production for the stage and screen.

For those unfamiliar, Oh, Mary! is an 80-minute dark comedy that reimagines Mary Todd Lincoln as a miserable, frustrated woman with dreams of becoming a cabaret star in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.

Cole celebrated the HBO news with a very on-brand statement.

“I’m so happy to share this show with a wider audience and spread OH, MARY! awareness,” they said. “Knowing about OH, MARY! is the first step in getting rid of it.”

Sam also reflected on getting to preserve the show on screen.

“I fell in love with theater as a kid by absolutely wearing out the VHS tapes of Cats and Into The Woods and I am honored to continue that legacy with OH, MARY! on HBO,” he said. “Shepherding OH, MARY! through its many lives (and Marys) has been an ecstatic experience and I’m giddy that the genius of original idiot Cole Escola will now be immortalized on televisions across America and beyond.”

Oh, Mary! first opened Off Broadway in January 2024 before transferring to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre that July. The production earned two Tony Awards, with Cole winning for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play and Sam winning for Best Direction of a Play.

The show later made its West End debut in December 2025, where it won the Olivier Award for Best New Entertainment or Comedy Play.

A North American tour is also kicking off this month, with performances scheduled across the country through 2027.

To celebrate the HBO announcement, Cole teamed up with Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon for a hilarious new teaser shared on social media.

In the clip, the Sex & the City co-stars greet Cole at a desk inside HBO headquarters, who hurriedly arrives and declares: “I would like to do my play here, please.”

“That’ll be nice to have around,” Sarah says to Cynthia as Sex & The City-esque music plays.

An exact 2027 premiere date has not yet been announced. Stay tuned!
