Ben Shelton is heading to the semi-finals of the 2026 US Open after defeating frontrunner Carlos Alcaraz in a shocking match that ended with the latest finish of all time.
The match didn’t begin until just after 11pm local time on Tuesday night (September 8) at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City.
Ben, 23, won the match in five sets following a tiebreak point, 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(7). The match didn’t end until 3:33am, making it the latest finish in US Open history.
After the match, Ben chatted with press in a middle of the night interview.
“I mean, it’s incredible,” Ben said (via CNN). “I always say this is the greatest sports city in the world, the greatest stadium in the world.”
“For me, it’s always about the people in the crowd. Whether it’s my coaches and my team over there or my family and friends over here,” he added. “Or the city of New York that showed up tonight until 3 a.m., with the ‘U-S-A’ chants until the very end. That’s what kept me going, and that’s what got me this win tonight.”
Ben Shelton will play against Frances Tiafoe in the semi-final
Ben will face off against fellow American player Frances Tiafoe in the semi-final on Friday, September 11. This guarantees that an American player will be in the finals at the US Open.
An American has not won the US Open men’s final since Andy Roddick was victorious in 2003.
This was Ben’s first win over Carlos
Ben defeated Carlos for the first time ever.
The two have faced each other three times previously, with Carlos winning all three matches. Their most recent meeting came at the 2025 French Open, where Carlos won in four sets.
Carlos had also won each of his previous 13 matches against American players at Grand Slam tournaments.
Ben earned his spot in the quarterfinals with a straight-sets victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas, while Carlos defeated Tommy Paul in straight sets.
