Obsession’s Michael Johnston Recalls Playing Gay Role on ‘Teen Wolf’ During ‘Terrifying’ Time & Being In Denial About His Own Sexuality

Michael Johnston is looking back at his time on Teen Wolf.
The 30-year-old actor, who is currently best known for starring in the breakout hit Obsession, previously had a recurring role on the last two seasons of the MTV series.
On the show, Michael played the openly gay character Corey Bryant, around the same time he was coming to terms with his own sexuality in real life.
During an appearance on Cosmopolitan‘s Blind Date series, Michael was asked if he felt the weight of playing a queer role back then.
“Back then, it was terrifying because I sort of came out to myself and then others around me during that time,” he said. “I was just in complete and utter denial. You know, I grew up in the South. So it was really scary.”
“I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna come out to L.A., and then all of a sudden I have that, and then all my family are like, ‘It’s not real,'” Michael continued. “I’m like no, no way, I would never. Then I have that crazy aunt who’s like, ‘It’s going to, it’s going to poison you.’ So now she’s like, ‘Aha, see!’ I’m just like, oh my god.”
He also shared that during the time of playing an openly gay character on TV, he didn’t expect all of the positive reactions.
“At the time, playing that role in Teen Wolf, I had no idea how many wonderful messages I would get from people saying, ‘Just being you and just being brave and just being yourself meant so much to me.’ And that was amazing,” he said.
Michael said he’s also “really looking forward to an intentional queer role.”
If you missed it, following the success of Obsession, Michael has found his next big role!
In addition, his co-star, Inde Navarrette, is joining the MCU.
