Nick Reiner Indicted in Murders of Parents Rob & Michele Reiner, New ‘Lying in Wait’ Allegation Added

Nick Reiner has been indicted on charges of murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner.

The 32-year-old son of the late filmmaker and photographer – who has been held without bail since his parents were found dead in their LA home on December 14, 2025 – is facing two counts of murder for the killing of his parents.

The grand jury indictment was returned on July 20 and unsealed Wednesday (August 12), via Variety.

What does the indictment mean?

After someone is charged with a serious crime, there can be a preliminary hearing where prosecutors have to present enough evidence in open court for a judge to decide whether the case should proceed to trial.

Instead, prosecutors presented the case to a grand jury. The grand jury returned an indictment on July 20, meaning it found sufficient basis to indict Nick, allowing prosecutors to skip the preliminary hearing.

The indictment also added a “lying in wait” special circumstance.

What does “lying in wait” mean?

The new special circumstance means prosecutors are alleging that Nick lay in wait before killing his parents. He already faced a “multiple murders” special circumstance because two people were killed.

Nick previously pled not guilty in the murder of his parents, and again pleaded not guilty to the revised charges.

When is the trial?

The indictment means that prosecutors can skip the preliminary hearing and move toward trial. His next pretrial hearing is on September 15.

“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a statement, via Variety.

“We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.”
