Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson & Miles Teller Star in First ‘Paper Tiger’ Teaser Trailer

The James Gray written and directed film, presented by Neon, stars Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller.

The movie is set to hit theaters on November 13.

What Is ‘Paper Tiger’ About?

Here’s the official synopsis:

In James Gray’s deeply felt and intense drama, two brothers become entangled in a scheme that turns out to be too good to be true. As they try to navigate their way through the dangerous world of the Russian mafia, family bonds begin to fray with life-altering consequences.

“This is a movie that is deeply personal and very accurate to my experience. It was written after the death of my father which for me was a time of reflection and it pushed me to be more openly emotional in my work, to write something out of love in a way I had never done before,” the director said of the project.

He also explained the significance of the movie’s title.

“The term was originally used by Mao Zedong in China in the early ‘70s, but it was appropriated by Russian communists to mean someone or something that presents himself as formidable, when in fact they are nothing. The West is a PAPER TIGER, the Communists always said. It’s funny because Trump has used the term several times in the news lately, and it’s very much a term from the era in which he surfaced. In the movie, Gary is telling Irwin that the Russians are Paper Tigers, but he might be talking about himself. There’s irony in the title because the Russians coming to America during that time were not Paper Tigers at all — they proved indomitable, too big for Gary or Irwin to comprehend.”

What James Gray Said About Working With Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson & Miles Teller

The director also spoke about Adam, Miles and Scarlett.

“These actors were more than able to understand the people they are playing possibly because they’re all New Yorkers for the most part. Miles is from New Jersey, but Adam has lived in New York City for decades, and Scarlett is a New Yorker, so they understand the city’s rhythms, and you can’t fake that. Good directing is essentially giving the actors space to let them do what they can do — it’s not about me. I let them improvise as much as they want. I rolled camera on every rehearsal so any mistake they made that was good was saved for posterity. Directing actors is like being the conductor of an orchestra, but in the case of these three actors, the level of craft was so high that all I would do is lay out the scenario, express to them my feelings about the scene, and let them do what they want.” Watch the teaser trailer above!
