Ben Davis is joining the cast of Broadway’s Hadestown in the role of Hades, replacing actor Geno Segers after he dropped out of the production amid controversy.

Ben is a Broadway veteran who most recently has been playing the role of Father in the Tony-winning revival of Ragtime. He also has been seen in Dear Evan Hansen, Heathers, Once Upon a Mattress, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and more.

Fans are thrilled over Ben‘s casting after he went viral for his performance of the Hades song “Hey, Little Songbird” at the So Cast Me Already! concert last year.

Geno was originally announced to be the next Hades in Hadestown, but then his past social media posts and YouTube videos came to light and caused a lot of controversy.

In the posts, Geno allegedly expressed transphobic views. OnStageBlog reported allegations that he had criticized pronoun usage and expressed opposition to trans women participating in women’s sports.

Geno released an apology statement, taking accountability for his words and vowing to educate himself and make things right.

The new cast of Hadestown, including Scream actress Jasmin Savoy Brown, will begin performances on September 1.
