Marvel just provided us with a huge succession update for its Black Panther franchise.

David Jonsson will be playing the grown-up Prince T’Challa. The actor joined Ryan Coogler, Letitia Wright, and Winston Duke onstage at Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con Panel on Saturday night (July 25).

Deadline reports that Ryan confirmed David will play the son of Chadwick Boseman‘s T’Challa and Lupita Nyong’o‘s Nakia in Black Panther 3, which is now dated for December 18, 2028.

The casting advances Wakanda’s royal family rather than recasting Chadwick‘s character. Fans first met the prince as a child in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s mid-credits scene, when Nakia introduced him to Shuri as Toussaint and he revealed that his Wakandan name is T’Challa. The third movie will find him coming of age with his eye on Wakanda’s crown.

David stood between the franchise veterans in Hall H, with photos capturing a warm welcome. He and Winston shared a hug before Ryan greeted the franchise newcomer with a handshake.

“Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and privilege and the blessing to join,” David said on stage.

Denzel Washington is also confirmed for the cast, though his role remains under wraps.
