Ed Sheeran Reflects on 10-Year Copyright Battle Over 'Thinking Out Loud' During Las Vegas Concert - Just Jared - Celebrity News and Gossip

Ed Sheeran is speaking out about his court case during his most recent concert appearance.

The 35-year-old singer-songwriter spoke out on Saturday (July 18) during his Loop Tour stop at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

If you didn’t know, a court ruled in 2023 that the singer-songwriter did not copy Marvin Gaye‘s “Let’s Get It On” when writing his hit “Thinking Out Loud.” Heirs of Marvin Gaye‘s co-writer argued that Ed Sheeran, Warner Music Group and Sony Music Publishing owed them money for copyright infringement. Ed had reportedly said that if he was found guilty he would give up his music career, which ultimately did not happen.

The copyright battle over Ed Sheeran‘s “Thinking Out Loud” lasted nearly 10 years.

“So, if you’ve seen my name in the news in the last 10 years, there’s a high likelihood it was connected to a lawsuit, and that lawsuit was a copyright infringement lawsuit,” he began to tell the crowd.

“Someone had said that I’d stolen their song…the only way for me to prove that I hadn’t was to go to court.”

“We were in court for three weeks, and the jury decided that I was right, and I won the court case. My only experience of court before actually going to court was like watching Judge Judy. Because my thought that someone says, ‘I’m gonna sue you,’ and then a week later you’re in court, and then that’s kind of it. In reality, it’s a long time. It was eight years of stuff,” he went on to explain. Watch above.
