What could be next for OnlyFans, after founder's death
Could it really become more PG?!
The future of OnlyFans has been thrown into question following the death of its billionaire owner, Leonid Radvinsky, at the age of 43.
Radvinsky, who bought the platform’s parent company back in 2018, turned it into one of the most profitable sites on the internet. Now, control of the business is believed to sit with his widow, who reportedly holds a majority stake through a family trust.
In a statement, the company confirmed the news, saying: “We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Leo Radvinsky. Leo passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer. His family have requested privacy at this difficult time.”
The shift in leadership could have a huge impact on what happens next. OnlyFans has built its success on adult content, taking a 20 per cent cut from millions of creators worldwide, many of whom earn money through explicit material.
Despite this, the platform has long tried to shake off its reputation as an adult site, instead branding itself as a social media success story. It’s a surprisingly small operation too, with just a few dozen employees, but still managed to pull in billions in revenue last year.
There have already been attempts to move away from explicit content in the past. In 2021, OnlyFans announced it would ban sexually explicit material altogether, before quickly reversing the decision after backlash from creators.
More recently, it launched a separate, “safe-for-work” streaming platform focused on lifestyle and fitness content, in what looks like another attempt to appeal to a wider audience. Still, most of the company’s money continues to come from adult content.
Some argue the site has played a major role in normalising online sex work, while supporters say it has given creators more control over their income than traditional platforms.
There are also questions around whether the company could be sold. Reports suggest talks had taken place with an investment firm about a potential deal, though it’s not clear what will happen to those discussions now.
With new leadership in place, the direction of OnlyFans feels more uncertain than ever. Whether it doubles down on what made it successful or tries once again to rebrand could define its next chapter.
