Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers are being forced to return $1,000 gift cards from filmmaker Tyler Perry.
TSA agents have not been paid in six weeks amid the partial government shutdown. A report from 11Alive previously stated that Perry‘s representatives distributed the gift cards but later the TSA workers were asked to return them.
He originally tried to give them direct cash gifts, but was told that was not allowed.

According to the outlet’s sources, “representatives for Perry worked through management, human resources and legal channels before returning to the airport to distribute the gift cards to TSA employees.”
Later, the airport’s federal security director “raised concerns” over the gift cards.
“Sources noted the development has created challenges for some workers, as portions of the funds may have already been used,” shared 11Alive.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security shared the following statement with the New York Post regarding why they had to return the gift cards.
“TSA officers are prohibited from accepting gifts at screening locations. Even during a shutdown, cash or cash equivalents cannot be accepted on behalf of the agency.”
The DHS placed the blame with the Democrats, continuing, “The effects of the Democrats’ Reckless DHS shutdown are hitting frontline officers hard—some are sleeping in their cars, selling blood to make ends meet, and struggling to pay rent. Democrats must re-open DHS now.”
Donald Trump previously threatened to send ICE to airports as the DHS fights for funding.
