Melanie Martinez just released her new album HADES, and one of the tracks, “THE VATICAN,” is getting a lot of attention for its lyricism.
The 30-year-old singer-songwriter opened up about the story behind the song’s genesis in a recent interview as well.

The track criticizes religious institutions for hypocrisy, especially within the Catholic Church, abuse, and allowing men to get away with crimes.
“Money, power got its chokehold on humanity / Nothing gives these motherf–kers quite a boner / Like religion, Catholic, Christian, kissing Jesus, licking AR-15s,” she declares.
“It’s so homoerotic, the way you pray to men / And treat your women like a Leviathan / Come out thе closet, sip my holy water / Pray to this p–sy, confess your sin.”
“Bet those robes they wear make you feel kinda freaky / Well, too bad, they are all celibate / It’s no wonder all the scandals are involving hurting little boys,” she later sings.
“Funny story about ‘[THE] VATICAN’ ‘cause people [will only understand] when [they] hear the album, they’ll know, but we actually wrote that song the day before the Republican National Convention. And so, and you know how like Grindr had like a— what was it?” she said on Unfamous with Justin Tranter of reports that the gay dating app experienced an outrage and alleged influx of anonymous users in the area of the convention.
“We thought it was so [perfect]. Perfect timing. So, anyway, yeah, ‘[THE] VATICAN’ in a nutshell.”
