An American journalist has been abducted in Iraq.
Shelly Kittleson was reporting from Baghdad for publications like BBC and Politico and on Tuesday (March 31), Iraq’s Interior Ministry said a “foreign journalist was abducted by ‘unknown people.’”
A United Arab Emirates publication called The National confirmed with sources that Kittleson was taken.

The National, a publication based in the United Arab Emirates which covers the Middle East, confirmed with sources that Kittleson was the journalist taken.
According to TMZ, she was in the central part of the city, close to the Palestine Hotel on Al-Saadoun Street.
Another publication, Al-Arabiya shared footage allegedly of her kidnapping. The video seems to show a car pulling up to speak to someone and then two men grab that person and pull them into a car before it veers away.
On Monday, Kittleson reshared a post on X about Spain closing its airspace to U.S. planes involved in the attack on Iran.
The Iraqi government has said they are conducting a search for her and has reportedly arrested a suspect.
Kittleson was also a contributor for Al-Monitor and they have released the following statement.
“We are deeply alarmed by the kidnapping of Al-Monitor contributor Shelly Kittleson in Iraq on Tuesday. We call for her safe and immediate release,” the statement reads. “We stand by her vital reporting from the region and call for her swift return to continue her important work.”
