Tony Dokoupil is responding to the shocking news of Scott Pelley‘s firing.

The 45-year-old CBS Evening News anchor responded to the news during a live broadcast on Wednesday (June 3).

“When I started at CBS, Scott Pelley was in this very chair still doing a dozen stories a year for 60 Minutes. And amid all of that, meeting every new correspondent to share his view of the mission here.,” he said.

“He believed Freedom of the Press, to quote [James] Madison, was the right that guaranteed all the others and that the stakes are always that high. And that if you made it to CBS News, you were among the best in the world. He worked every single day to live up to that standard.”

After airing segments of the fired anchor, Tony noted that Scott changed the show’s logo, removing his own name and writing “CBS Evening News with All of Us.”

“Well, Scott, from all of us, thank you,” Tony said. Watch above.

Scott Pelley was fired from 60 Minutes amid a string of firings as the organization undergoes significant changes under the leadership of editorial chief Bari Weiss. His firing comes just one day after he got into a heated argument with newly appointed executive producer Nick Bilton, a former tech journalist hired by Weiss.
