Matteo Berrettini is out at the 2026 French Open following an injury.
The 30-year-old Italian tennis player appeared to sustain a left hip injury while playing against fellow Italian player Matteo Arnaldi, 25, in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Wednesday (June 3).
While Berrettini led in the opening of their match, he seemingly got hurt and took a medical timeout, trying to play afterward despite his team clearly wanting him to stop. His brother reportedly said “You have got to stop,” via BBC.
He was seen crying as he stayed in his seat, until he eventually embraced his opponent.
Arnaldi is now moving on to the semifinals against Flavio Cobolli. The winner will take on whoever wins in the Alexander Zverev and Jakub Mensik match. This will be a first win for whoever takes it to the end.
“It is a tough one. We both played a lot, so it is normal to be not at our best, but you never wish for someone to end the tournament like this,” Arnaldi said in an interview afterward.
“He did an amazing tournament. We are doing such a good job in Italy. I am sorry for him and I hope he recovers because soon it is the grass, and he is going to be very tough to play.”
“I am tired, that is for sure. I am tired, but I train to play this kind of tournament and this kind of match. I am trying to give it all that I have got. Today I was a little bit more tired than usual. I am here and I am enjoying playing tennis again. I was injured not long ago. I still can’t believe it [that he is in the semi-finals] when I think about where I was a month ago. I was almost 150th in the world. Now I am here – it is crazy to think. I love to play in front of this crowd and I am happy to be here,” he continued.
The World No. 1 women’s player was also eliminated on the same day.
