Barry Manilow Shares Fears About His Voice After Lung Cancer Surgery: 'I Don't Know Whether It's Coming Back' - Just Jared - Celebrity News and Gossip

Barry Manilow is opening up about losing his voice after undergoing a left lung lobectomy to treat his lung cancer.
“My voice — I don’t know whether it’s coming back,” the Grammy-winning “Copacabana” singer shared with ABC News’ Chris Connelly on Good Morning America in an episode that aired on Monday (June 1).
“I did my first sound check about a month ago and I didn’t sound like me at all. I just couldn’t believe that it’s over,” he continued.
Barry revealed his cancer on his website in December 2025 after going to the doctor in November to check on his hips. After conducting an MRI on his pelvis, the doctors checked his lungs, too, as he’d recently had bronchitis.
“They checked my lungs, and they found the dot, the spot, that thing that you don’t want to, you don’t want to ever have,” Barry said. “They said I had lung cancer and we have to get it out.”
The lobectomy left his voice altered.
Speaking on Good Morning America, the “Mandy” singer said he is still “doing good” but getting past the cancer is taking longer than he expected.
Barry turns 83 on June 17, 2026, and he’s got a busy slate year ahead of him. His new album What a Time releases on June 5. He also has several performances scheduled for 2026 with his first stadium show set for June 25 and his next Las Vegas residency in July.
“I can’t wait to get back. I’m in great shape, I’m ready to go. I just hope my voice is there. If I sound good, that would be just great. I really don’t want to cry on stage, but I don’t know whether I’ll be able to hold that back this time,” he said.
A couple of months ago, Barry talked more in-depth about the diagnosis and recovery process and why he considers himself “one of the lucky ones.”
Last week, the songwriter opened up about his sexuality and his decision to stay closeted for many decades of his career.
