Before pop stardom, Tate McRae competed on So You Think You Can Dance, and one of the judges was none other than one of her former rival competitors Maddie Ziegler!

The 23-year-old Pretty Lethal actress was a judge on So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation, the 13th season of the reality competition, where the 22-year-old “Revolving Door” singer was competing and came in third place.

During a recent interview, Maddie looked back on what it was like judging her former competitor on the Fox reality show.

“We used to compete against each other, and [McRae] – beat me at, like, our big award show. It was like the biggest thing you can win, called the Dance Awards, and she won. Normally, when I was younger, I was like a sore loser. Like if I didn’t win, I was really upset,” she said on a recent episode of Therapuss with Jake Shane.

“And that’s what I was taught, you know. So… I was just so inspired by her and I loved her. And then there — So You Think You Can Dance Juniors — I was a judge on that, and I judged her. She was one of the contestants. So… it was so weird,” Maddie recalled.

When asked if that was when they became friends, Maddie added, “We weren’t really allowed to be friends because you can’t talk to the judge… So, we had to wait until after we wrapped and then we like, we’re friends and then we just like, knew each other.”

“But I feel like when I was around 16, 17, we got close again and started hanging out in LA. And I love her so much. She’s killing it,” she added.

Since then, Maddie has gone on to star in several Sia music videos, as well as go on tour with the singer. Now, she’s transitioned into acting, most recently combining her dance skills with acting in Prime Video’s Pretty Lethal, which is out now.

Since SYTCYD, Tate has now become a huge pop star!
