Kacey Musgraves gave one of the most emotional performances of the night at the VMAs, but she wasn’t actually there in person.
The country singer pre-taped her performance for the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, which took place on Sunday (September 27) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
There’s a good reason why she couldn’t be there live in-person.
Why Kacey Musgaves wasn’t actually at the VMAs
Kacey couldn’t be at the VMAs because she had a show on her Middle of Nowhere Tour tonight in Nashville, Tennessee. That’s thousands of miles away from Los Angeles, where the MTV awards show is happening.
Kacey will be touring across the U.S. through the end of October and then she’ll bring the tour to Australia and the UK in early 2027. Make sure to check out the setlist for her tour!
Dolly Parton tribute
Kacey performed a cover of Dolly‘s classic song “I Will Always Love You” during the tribute to the late icon. The performance began with a clip of Dolly performing the song, segueing into Kacey‘s performance.
The performance aired with a video inside the VMAs theater.
