The new movie Primetime explores Chris Hansen‘s life during the To Catch a Predator years, including his marriage with wife Mary Joan Hansen and how it was allegedly rocky at that time.

In the movie, Chris is seen spending extensive time away from his family and going through a rough patch in his marriage. At the same time, he gets caught having an alleged affair and Mary learns about it in the final scene of the film.

So, are they still married in real life?

Chris and Mary Joan got married in 1989 and welcomed two kids during their marriage. Son Chase was born in 1992 and son Connor was born in 1994.

Mary Joan filed for divorce in June 2018. People reported months later that Chris was evicted from his New York City home and he was also arrested and charged with issuing bad checks.

In her divorce papers, Mary Joan said that “the marriage has broken down irretrievably.”

Did Chris Hansen really cheat on his wife?

The National Enquirer really did accuse Chris of having an affair with TV reporter Kristyn Caddell, but the timeline appears to be different than in the movie.

Primetime depicts the alleged affair as happening during production on To Catch a Predator, with Mary Joan learning of the affair on the night of his final sting. The final sting happened in 2008 while the National Enquirer story reported on an affair that allegedly happened in 2011.

“Chris told me a divorce was inevitable and the wedding ring on his finger was all but for the show,” Kristyn told the Enquirer. “Over the next several months, our friendship evolved into a whirlwind romance. As far as I was concerned, none of it was being done secretly or concealed from the public.”

Sources close to Chris denied the affair at the time.

Years later, Chris told Mel Magazine, “To equate having dinner with a friend to somebody committing a felony is neither fair nor a conversation worth having. In reality, it was a whole lot of nothing.”
