Godzilla Minus Zero is a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One. It returns to the same family and picks up two years after the events of the 2023 movie.

The connection is getting fresh attention today, as Minus Zero makes its world premiere at the 2026 New York Film Festival on Saturday (September 26).

Do you need to watch Godzilla Minus One first?

You’ll have a much better understanding of the returning characters if you do. Minus Zero continues the story of the Shikishima family in 1949, as Japan is still recovering from the destruction in the first film and soon faces another threat.

Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as Koichi Shikishima, and Minami Hamabe is back as Noriko Oishi. Motosuke Iida will also reprise his role as Akio Itagaki. Among the newcomers is Masami Nagasawa, who plays weather forecaster Makoto Aoyama.

When does Godzilla Minus Zero come out?

The movie is scheduled to open in Japan on November 3, 2026, followed by a North American theatrical release on November 6.
