Taylor Swift just announced her new single “Patient Zero” is arriving on September 25, two days before the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards are set to take place.
It was confirmed this week that Taylor is going to be honored at the event with the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors and she’s also nominated for nine awards at the show.
Taylor is not yet confirmed as a performer at the event, but with the timing of her new single, fans are wondering if she’s going to also debut “Patient Zero” at the VMAs. If she does, it will be a major moment.
Taylor Swift has not performed in front of a live awards-show audience since 2019
Taylor has not performed in front of a live audience at an awards show since 2019, when she performed a medley of songs from the Lover album as well as some of her greatest hits.
That performance happened on November 24, 2019 and included the songs “The Man,” “Love Story,” “I Knew You Were Trouble,” “Blank Space,” “Shake It Off,” and “Lover.”
In the years since then, Taylor did perform “Betty” at the 2020 ACM Awards and a medley at the 2021 Grammy Awards, but neither of those performances were in front of a live studio audience because of the pandemic.

It has been seven years since Taylor has performed for the VMAs, so it will be huge for MTV to get her back on stage and performing live at the event!
Taylor Swift still hasn’t performed The Life of a Showgirl songs live
Taylor still has not yet performed any songs from The Life of a Showgirl for a live audience, so it will be a huge moment if she also performs any of those tracks alongside “Patient Zero.”
Fans have been clamoring for live performances of these songs, so this could be the moment to give them what they want.
A live performance of “Patient Zero” will help the song hit number one and break the streak of Ella Langley‘s “Choosin’ Texas.”
