Miley Cyrus appears to be singing about her younger sister Noah Cyrus on one of the most personal songs from her new album.

The 33-year-old singer released her new album Bass Persuades on Friday (September 18), and fans are taking a closer look at the lyrics to the song “Innocent Ways.”

While Miley never mentions Noah by name in the song, she repeatedly sings about a younger sister. Noah, 26, is Miley‘s only younger sister. (She also has siblings Braison, 32, Brandi, 39, and Trace, 37.)

Is Miley Cyrus’ “Innocent Ways” About Noah Cyrus?

The song begins with Miley expressing concern for her sister and describing late-night phone calls while she’s going through a difficult period.

“I want better for my sister / She calls me only when it’s late night and she’s high,” Miley sings. “Her mind is spinning / Eight nights in a row / She’s been in a crisis / She looks just like me, yeah, when she cries / Now that we’re both older.”

She later sings about trying to protect her sister while acknowledging lessons she learned as she got older.

“I tried to save all of her innocent ways / Grace comes with age, but don’t tell her,” she sings.

Miley spoke about that particular lyric during an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music.

“One of my lyrics in there is that grace comes with age. Like I never knew that. Well, you can’t tell a young person that when you’re older you’re going to understand something that you don’t understand now,” she explained.

Miley Cyrus Sings About a Letter She Regrets Sending

Another section of “Innocent Ways” appears to describe a period when Miley was unable to get in contact with her sister.

“I made the error / I kinda caved when I know better / I should’ve never sent that letter,” Miley sings before wondering whether her sister changed her phone number and saying that she tried calling three times.

The lyrics don’t reveal what was in the letter or confirm who received it.

The song also includes a reference to possibly claiming her mother’s maiden name amid the “fall out from the fame.” Miley notably dropped “Cyrus” from her professional name ahead of the release of Bass Persuades.

What Have Miley Cyrus & Noah Cyrus Said About Their Relationship?

The sisters have faced speculation about their relationship amid well-publicized changes within the Cyrus family in recent years, particularly following parents Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus‘ divorce.

However, neither Miley nor Noah has confirmed that “Innocent Ways” is specifically about Noah, so the connection remains an interpretation based on the lyrics.

Noah has also publicly expressed love for her older sister despite speculation about tension within the family.
