Thirty-plus years later, A Low Down Dirty Shame still has fans falling to the floor with laughter and bracing their seats for more action. Released in 1994 and written and directed by the legendary Keenen Ivory Wayans, it fused shootouts, comedic one-liners, and 90s style into something that didn’t fit neatly into any studio box at the time, which is probably exactly why it’s aged so well. Here’s a look back at the funny, action-packed film and what the cast are up to now.

Wayans stars as Andre Shame, a disgraced former LAPD detective scraping by as a low-rent private investigator, a man convinced his past is dead and buried, until an old buddy from the force drops a bombshell: drug kingpin Ernesto Mendoza (Andrew Divoff), the man who torched Shame’s police career, is very much alive.
Handed the job of tracking down millions in missing drug money, Shame dives right back into the deep end. He’s got backup in the form of Peaches Jordan (Jada Pinkett Smith), his ferociously loyal, motor-mouthed assistant who steals nearly every scene she’s in, and he’s got a problem in the form of Angela Flowers (Salli Richardson), the gorgeous, thoroughly untrustworthy ex-flame who keeps turning up right where the trouble is. Between corrupt officials, double-crosses, and Peaches’ running commentary, the movie never sits still long enough to become one thing.
That was the whole idea. Speaking to the press in the 90s, Keenen Ivory Wayans explained that he was going for a blend “of different genres” to give a little bit of something for everyone. As he put it:
“There’s comedy in it, but it’s also action.”
Studios now build entire franchises on that formula. Wayans was doing it in 1994 with a private eye, a wisecracking sidekick, and a briefcase full of missing cash.

Jada Pinkett Smith
So what happened to everyone? Jada Pinkett Smith, who was on the rise when she played Peaches, went on to become a genuine Hollywood institution — acting, producing, and hosting the enormously popular digital talk show Red Table Talk, which wrapped its run in 2023, after making her one of the most talked-about voices in the space. In 2026, she’s back in front of the camera in a big way, reprising her breakout role as Lena James in Netflix’s A Different World sequel series, roughly 35 years after she first joined the original, and she’s set to reunite with Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, and Tiffany Haddish for Girls Trip 2, which should be heading into production soon, according to PEOPLE.
Salli Richardson-Whitfield
Salli Richardson-Whitfield, the dangerous and seductive Angela, made one of the most impressive pivots in the business. She traded the leading-lady track for the director’s chair and became one of television’s most in-demand filmmakers, with credits spanning The Gilded Age, Winning Time, Wheel of Time, Queen Sugar, Scandal, and more. In 2024, she became the first Black woman nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, and in 2026 she made history again as the first Black woman to earn two nominations in that category in the same year, for The Gilded Age and HBO’s Task. Not bad for someone who says she didn’t move to Los Angeles with a plan at all.
Charles S. Dutton
Charles S. Dutton, who played Shame’s old partner Sonny Rothmiller, was already one of the most respected actors alive by 1994, and he only added to it — three Emmy wins, a Tony-nominated stage career, and a résumé running from Roc to the 1997 sci-fi horror Mimic. He has since stepped away from the industry quietly, leaving behind a legacy on stage and screen that younger actors still study.
Corwin Hawkins
And then there’s Corwin Hawkins, who played Wayman Harrington, Peaches’ unforgettable, fashion-forward best friend and a character audiences quote to this day. Tragically, Hawkins died of AIDS-related pneumonia on Aug. 5, 1994, at just 29 — roughly three and a half months before the film reached theaters. A Low Down Dirty Shame was dedicated to his memory.
Keenen Ivory Wayans
As for Keenen Ivory Wayans himself, he never stopped working, and 2026 brought him full circle: he returned to the franchise he launched, co-writing and producing Scary Movie 6, which hit theaters in June of this year, alongside brothers Marlon and Shawn.
Sadly, A Low Down Dirty Shame never picked up major awards. Its most notable nod came from Jada Pinkett Smith’s Chicago Film Critics Association nomination for Most Promising Actress.
But awards or not, this 90s classic earned something better: a permanent spot in our hearts. In our eyes, it was award-worthy all along.
