All the Celebs at Toronto Film Festival on September 15: Penelope Cruz’s ‘La Bola Negra’ Gets Big Oscar Boost

We’re only halfway through the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival and there were so many stars on the red carpet at the festival on Tuesday, September 15.

Penelope Cruz‘s new movie La Bola Negra seemed to be the highlight of the day, with the movie getting a huge Oscar boost amid rave reviews from the festival.

There were also premieres for Guy Pearce and Jack O’Connell‘s Ink, Johnny Flynn and Aimee Lou Wood‘s The Idiot(s), and more. Keep scrolling to see all of the celebs spotted at the festival!

La Bola Negra

Penelope was joined on the carpet by Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Guitarricadelafuente, Javier Calvó, Javier Ambrossi and Milo Quifes.

Guitarricadelafuente and Miguel lead the cast with Penelope, Carlos, and Milo as part of the ensemble cast, directed by Calvó and Ambrossi.

A bold tapestry spanning nearly a century of Spanish history, La Bola Negra tells the story of three generations of men whose lives are intimately connected through desire, pain, and love. The film takes place in three different eras – 1932, 1937, and 2017.

Kalshi now has La Bola Negra in second place to win Best Picture at the Oscars, right behind The Odyssey.

Tenzing

Based on true events, Tenzing chronicles the little-known story of Tenzing Norgay (Genden Phuntsok), a gifted Himalayan climber who, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary (Tom Hiddleston), became the first to summit Mount Everest. Encouraged by his wife Dawa (Thinley Lhamo), Tenzing finds an ally in expedition secretary Jill Henderson (Caitríona Balfe). Together, they persuade Colonel John Hunt (Willem Dafoe) that Tenzing belongs on the British climbing team, rather than merely serving it. Where Western climbers see “Everest” as something to be conquered, Tenzing reveres “Chomolungma” as the sacred mother goddess. What follows is an ascent defined as much by the tensions between backgrounds, classes and competing ambitions as by the perils of the mountain itself. But high above the world, empire, rank and aspiration fall away, leaving two outsiders bound by mutual respect and trust — and for Tenzing, the fulfillment of both a lifelong dream and a spiritual calling. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Peedom, “Tenzing” is a story of greatness that refuses to be diminished — and the love that makes it possible.

Tom Hiddleston and Caitriona Balfe were both the carpet for the premiere of the film, which is going to theaters on October 9 and Apple TV on October 16.

The Idiot(s)

Aimee Lou Wood and Johnny Flynn “bring to life the story of Anna and Fyodor Dostoevsky, showcasing the troubled author and the woman who pushed him to write one of his greatest works.”

Hombre al agua

Gael Garcia Bernal hit the carpet for the premiere of his new film, which he directed and stars in.

What is Hombre al agua about?

The Venice Film Festival provided the below synopsis:

Camilo (Bernal), a Cuban lifeguard, saves Mexican businessman Abel (Salinas)from drowning. Grateful, Abel brings Camilo to Mexico, where he marries Abel’s daughter, Juana, and they have a child. But Camilo soon discovers his new life is part of Abel’s Machiavellian plan of manipulation and control. With his world collapsing, Camilo must uncover the plot and take control of his destiny. Will he find a way out, or remain trapped in the power game?

Atonement

Kenneth Branagh, Hiam Abbass, and Boyd Holbrook attended their Atonement premiere together.

In Baghdad, in 2003, US Marine Lou D’Alessandro (Holbrook) and his unit open fire on two ostensibly hostile vehicles. Three passengers are killed before it’s revealed that those vehicles were carrying three generations of a civilian family. A decade later, following a dishonorable discharge, Lou is back in San Diego, haunted by the incident, unsupported by Veterans Affairs, and unable to continue the life he started before the war.

Meanwhile, Mariam (Abbass), the matriarch of the family torn apart on that fateful day, has begun a new life in Glendale with her daughter’s young family. She’s profiled by journalist Michael Reid (Branagh), who was also in Baghdad when the tragedy unfolded. Desperate to explain his side of the story, Lou asks Michael to broker a meeting with Mariam. Though terrified of reopening old wounds, Lou believes this might be everyone’s best chance to finally heal. 

Ashes

Diego Luna is the director of the new film Ashes and he hit the red carpet for the premiere!

Ashes is billed as “a powerful and deeply humane portrait of the immigrant experience through the eyes of a young woman forced to rebuild her life in a new country, delivering a nuanced exploration of family, identity, belonging, and displacement.”

Ink

Guy Pearce and Jack O’Connell attended the festival for their Ink premiere.

The movie is based on the Tony-nominated play by James Graham, who adapted the project for the screen.

The movie is billed as “an explosive cinematic roller coaster about a group of visionaries and misfits who had an idea for a new kind of news — one that would give the people what they want and change the face of the world we live in today.”

Ink will hit select theaters on December 11 before being released on Netflix in the U.S. and Latin America on January 8, 2027.

Mr. Nelson, Did You Kill People?

Mark Merphy, Rodney Hicks, and Geoffrey Rush walked the carpet for their premiere.

At the age of 18, Allen Nelson, an African American man driven by poverty and discrimination, enlists in the military in search of a way out. In the brutal battlegrounds of Vietnam, he is taught a single lesson: how to kill as many people as possible. In return, he receives only meager wages and the lasting trauma of PTSD. By 23, Allen is forced out of his home and left homeless. The only thread keeping him connected to the world is Dr. Daniels, a psychiatrist working at a veterans’ hospital who provides him with counseling and support.

The Unknown

French actors Niels Schneider and Lea Seydoux star in the new movie.

After David (Niels Schneider), a withdrawn photographer, attends a raucous party and tries a mysterious pill, he locks eyes with a woman he vaguely recognizes (Léa Seydoux), leading to a backroom hookup. The next morning’s hangover, however, reveals that he has somehow come to occupy the woman’s body, setting him on a frantic search for answers. He manages to learn that she is a German actor named Eva, and discovers that rather than a traditional swap, a young terrified woman named Malia (Lilith Grasmug) is, in fact, now housed in David’s body. As David/Eva and Malia/David are forced to grapple with the psychological toll of a disembodied existence, the film’s daring narrative grows evermore labyrinthine and unsettling.
