Producers Reveal How Mariska Hargitay Recruited Her

Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance at the 2026 Emmy Awards this week, and now producers are revealing how they pulled it off!

The 36-year-old superstar popped up in a pre-taped Law & Order: SVU sketch alongside her longtime friend Mariska Hargitay, who hosted the awards show.

While fans were surprised to see Taylor in the sketch, it turns out the idea of getting her involved came up very early in the planning process.

How Did Taylor Swift’s Emmys Cameo Happen?

Emmys executive producer Dionne Harmon revealed that Mariska was instrumental in getting her famous friend to participate.

“They’re genuine friends,” she told Variety. “She’s like, ‘lemme hit Tay Tay!'”

Executive producer Jesse Collins explained that the team came up with several possibilities for Taylor before landing on the SVU sketch.

“That was an idea that Taylor responded to,” he said.

Did Taylor Swift Come Up With the Emmys Easter Eggs?

Taylor wasn’t just following a script either. She offered her own ideas for the sketch, including the mysterious Easter eggs that immediately got Swifties talking after it aired.

“Taylor loved the script and she had some thoughts and we worked that in,” Jesse said.

When asked what her notes involved, he replied, “The Easter eggs.”

Producer Jeannae Rouzan-Clay added, “She wanted them to be really official. And correct.”

The sketch was filmed on the SVU set in New York in late August under tight security in order to keep Taylor‘s involvement a secret.

Was That Taylor Swift’s Real Cat Olivia Benson?

Another memorable part of the sketch was Taylor appearing with her real-life cat Olivia Benson, who was famously named after Mariska‘s SVU character.

That addition was Taylor‘s idea at the last minute.

“The night before, she was like, ‘What if I put the cat in the scene?'” Jesse recalled. “And we were like, that would be awesome. So we did it. And the cat delivered!”

Producers also revealed that Taylor has watched nearly every episode of SVU.

Despite appearing during the Emmys telecast, Taylor wasn’t actually at the awards show that night. The segment had been taped weeks earlier. Find out where she actually was!
