News broke today that feminist icon Gloria Steinem has sadly passed away at the age of 92.
If you are not aware, the activist played a major role in the feminist movement by advocating for women’s equality, reproductive rights, and greater political participation.
What many people may not know, is she had a very famous stepson.
Gloria Steinem was stepmother to Academy Award winning actor Christian Bale
Gloria Steinem married Christian‘s dad, David Bale, in 2000, when she was 66 years old. You can see a photo of them above.
David was a businessman and activist. He unfortunately passed away at the age of 62, just three years after they wed.
“I spent 30 years working to make marriage for women more equal,” Gloria told the New York Daily News back in 2000. “This is the first time I wanted to explore this possibility for myself.”
About the age she decided to get married, she once told The Ledger, “I never thought of [marrying younger]. I didn’t want to marry until then. I couldn’t have married in my 20s or 30s. The laws were terrible. You gave up all your civil rights (to sole property ownership and credit). It wouldn’t have been personally right.”
She was also step-mother to his other kids, Louise Bale, Sharon Bale, and Erin Kreunen.
Christian Bale did not know his father had gotten married until after it happened
“It was news to me; I was in Germany. I found out about it afterwards,” Christian shared with The Guardian in 2018.
He also added, “I don’t think my father thought that anything like this would happen to him at this point in his life,” via Interview in 2012.
It looks like Gloria Steinem supported Christian Bale in recent years
Back in 2022, she attended a screening for his Netflix movie The Pale Blue Eye in New York City.
