Patrick Schwarzenegger, Lucas Hedges & 2 More Stars Join Mike Birbiglia’s ‘Dream Project’ After He Pulls Out of John Mulaney Shows

Mike Birbiglia is assembling a big roster of stars for his new “dream project,” called Old Friends New Friends.

The Focus Features comedy is set to begin filming this fall according to Deadline, and includes Lucas Hedges, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Dylan Gelula among the cast.

Here’s the official logline: “When a tight-knit group of college friends travels to a summer camp for their old friend’s wedding, they discover he’s built a new life — with new friends — forcing them to confront what they’ve lost, who they’ve become, and whether growing up means growing apart.”

Mike will be directing the movie from his own script.

This is Mike‘s next directorial feature following 2012’s dramedy Sleepwalk With Me, followed by 2016’s Don’t Think Twice.

The news comes after the surprising announcement earlier this month that Mike would be pulling out of a set of upcoming shows with John Mulaney to pursue a then-unnamed “dream project,” which turned out to be this movie.

He had revealed the news in an exclusive message to his fan club, and said that the four shows would be prioritized in his 2027 solo tour, via TheWrap.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Patrick would star as Gus Everett in Beach Read, prompting some casting backlash.
