Kathy Griffin Says She Was ‘Not Invited’ During Rosie O’Donnell’s ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Week: ‘My Feelings Are Really Hurt’

Kathy Griffin is getting honest, and admitting her feelings are “really hurt.”
The 65-year-old comedian uploaded a YouTube video, in which she admitted that she’s upset that Rosie O’Donnell did not invite her onto her week of guest-hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Why Wasn’t Kathy Griffin Invited onto Rosie O’Donnell’s Guest Hosting Gig?
“My feelings are really hurt that I was not invited to go on Rosie’s week of the Jimmy Kimmel show. And I love Jimmy so much. He’s one of my oldest friends. I love Rosie. She’s one of my oldest friends. Like I said, we’re good pals. We’re like sisters, and everybody knows sisters fight. Sisters and brothers fight. Best friends fight. Relatives, co-workers fight. And we’re not even fighting. I’m just being honest,” she explained.
“She told me about being asked by the Kimmel show to do a whole week, which I thought was fantastic. I thought it was a great marketing idea. I thought it was a great idea to begin with. She and Jimmy had had many years of kind of a quasi-beef. I mean, it wasn’t serious, serious, but they’re good now, which makes me very, very happy. We talked about her doing Kimmel a lot. And one of the first things I said was, ‘Well, this doesn’t need to be said, but I would love to be a guest,'” she continued.
“Think about it. You’ve got these two women who share this very unique thing in common. And while what happened to me was much more extreme than what happened to Rosie, it’s pretty unusual that you’ve got these two women that have been so outspoken. He wasn’t the president when she talked about him on The View, but he was the president when I talked about him. And as I have spoken about before, most of Hollywood turned on me overnight. The phone stopped ringing. I got fired from every job that I had coming up. I ended up going on for seven years without work, which was really bad for my brain,” she went on to say, referring to their respective feuds with President Donald Trump.
What Did Rosie O’Donnell Say About Kathy Griffin?
She also shared Rosie‘s supportive comments over the years, but noted that Rosie criticized the infamous Trump decapitated mask photo in a recent podcast appearance.
“I felt horrible for what he did to Kathy Griffin. I didn’t agree with her choice of having that decapitated mask. I know that she was doing it for shock value and wanted to cause a ruckus, but I don’t think she was ready for the kind of torment that he put her through for so many years. And I think she did suffer a lot and went through some very dark times.”
“I did not know that she never had anything positive to say about that picture,” Kathy said.
“When I heard that tape of Rosie saying that on the podcast, I was just kind of like, ‘Oh man, haven’t I paid the price for that picture yet?’ I mean, it’s been nine years. Nine years. And I believe the question was, ‘Talk to me about your friendship with Kathy Griffin. I know you guys have been friends for a long time.’ And she answered a totally different question, which threw me off for a second,” she noted.
“I’m not sure why she went there, and at a future time hopefully we’ll have a talk about it, or not. We’ll both decide. But I value her friendship, as I value her as a comic and a groundbreaker.”
Kathy Griffin Speaks About Not Being Invited
“As it was coming closer that she was going to do the show, I started getting more correspondence and just friends calling me that know me and know the two of us to be friends, saying, ‘Which night are you doing? Are you going to be a surprise? Are you guys doing a sketch or just a sit-down interview? Are you guys going to do a song together? It’s going to be great, the two of you together talking about this, of all things.’ And I admit I was kind of getting excited, like, yeah, this could be a really cool moment. Then that moment passed and kept passing,” Kathy reflected.
Kathy Griffin Says She Was Given “the Kibosh”
“Then the other calls started coming in from various places. So, not just one person who tells a lie all the time, but different folks from different parts of the industry that know this sort of thing. The first call came in and they said, ‘Okay, we’re just going to be honest with you.’ And I said, ‘All right, what does that mean?’ And they said, ‘You got the kibosh,’ which means you are not invited to go on the Kimmel show when Rosie is subhosting. And it came directly from these two people. And they told me the two people, and I’m not going to tell you,” she said.

“I was told specifically that ABC had nothing to do with keeping me off the show, and Kimmel and the staff had nothing to do with keeping me off the show. It’s important to me to say that. I didn’t think it sounded like something that would come from the Kimmel show, but once again, that’s their prerogative, and I was told by every person that I spoke to that it did not.”
“I will watch every night and cheer her on. Of course. If I have one call to action, it’s that you guys watch the show and support her. Support comedy. Support women in comedy. Support bold people in comedy because we don’t get rewarded very much. We usually get fired,” she added.
“I am just here to tell you my feelings were hurt. That’s it. That’s as deep as it gets. I’m always honest with you guys, good, bad or indifferent, and this felt like one of the times I just had to kind of put it out there and see how you feel.”
Many of the comments reassured Kathy that Rosie is still supportive, even if she didn’t like the mask photo. Watch her speak out above.
