Tinashe is not slowing down.
The 33-year-old “2 On” superstar just dropped the EDM-driven “Melatonin” on Thursday (August 13), the third single from her upcoming album Popstar, produced by Nightfeelings, Zack Sekoff and Ricky Reed.
“Bet you thought we’d stop / You already know we kept it going, getting hella coin / Walking by, I see you hella pointing / Talking, talking, talking, talking, talking / Bitch, you hell annoying / Sleeping, sleeping, sleeping on me / Bitch, you so melatonin,” Tinashe declares.
Who is speaking in the song?
The interlude includes the line: “Why you crying? I never wanna stop partying, I love this s–t.”
It’s sampled from a viral TikTok from user @kyaralechaee featuring @tayisgoofy. In the video, @kyralechaee asks @tayisgoofy why she’s crying, who turns around and gives an answer that has since gone viral, being used in songs and DJ sets.
The accompanying music video for “Melatonin” was directed by 91 Rules, and is described in an official release as “a celebration of dance, spotlighting dancers across a range of styles, including ballet, hip-hop, and ballroom. Throughout the video, Tinashe commands the screen in a series of striking, avant-garde looks that complement the track’s bold creative vision.”
Popstar will be released on September 25. Pre-order it in various formats right here.
What is Popstar about?
With Popstar, Tinashe immerses her fans into her current era: one filled with defiant and unapologetic anthems, paired with high-energy, choreography filled visuals to match that continue to show off her innate ability to flawlessly blend genres and pave her own path.
“The concept actually came to me right away,” Tinashe explained.
“I think I mostly started with concept and then unpacked what that meant, and started writing songs that delved into all of the different feelings that I feel when just thinking about what that means to me,” she continued.
“I wasn’t even sure that I wanted to name the album that at first. I just knew that that was the energy I wanted to bring to the table. Then eventually, I was like, You know what? This album is called Popstar.”
