Luigi Mangione is reportedly negotiating a plea deal with federal prosecutors amid his ongoing federal and state criminal cases after being accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2024.

Sources tell CNN that the 28-year-old’s legal team is in negotiations that “are fluid” and “may not result in a resolution.”

A hearing was “hastily scheduled” before the federal judge on Friday (August 14).

His legal team reportedly spoke to federal prosecutors about a possible plea deal in June, but nothing came of that at the time.

His lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo said at the time in a statement: “This information attributed to ‘anonymous sources’ is part of a troubling, deliberate pattern by prosecutors and law enforcement to prejudice Luigi, manipulate public opinion, and violate his constitutional right to a fair trial and impartial jury.”

“Every defendant in America is presumed innocent until proven guilty, including Luigi, who, unlike any other defendant, has to fight the same charges twice,” she went on to say, regarding his state and federal charges.

Federal prosecutors and Luigi‘s legal team jointly requested a conference with the judge, without publicly explaining the reason.

He previously pleaded not guilty in both cases. He faces two stalking charges resulting in death in his federal case, and second-degree murder and weapons charges in his state case.

He could face life in prison without parole if convicted on the federal charges. The state murder charge could also lead to 25 years to life in state prison.

Luigi just appeared in court earlier this week, where the judge made some decisions.
