Marjane Satrapi, the acclaimed graphic novelist best known for the bestselling memoir Persepolis, has died at the age of 56.
Marjane‘s family confirmed her death in a statement shared with Agence France-Presse news agency, via People, revealing that she died from “sadness” a little more than a year after the death of her husband, Swedish actor and producer Mattias Ripa.
“Marjane Satrapi died of sadness a little over a year after the death of Mattias Ripa, her husband and the love of her life,” the family said in the announcement.
In a statement released on June 4 following news of her death, the French government paid tribute to Marjane‘s cultural impact, describing her as “a leading figure in French culture and an artist deeply committed to freedom.”
Officials also called her “a great artist who transformed an Iranian childhood into a universal fable.”
Born in Iran, on November 22, 1969, Marjane became one of the world’s most celebrated graphic novelists through her deeply personal storytelling.
Her groundbreaking autobiographical graphic novel Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, published in 2003, chronicled her experiences growing up during the Iranian Revolution and its aftermath. The book earned international acclaim and introduced millions of readers to her story.
